HOUSTON – Harris County authorities, along with federal agents, are warning the public about widespread fake text messages targeting victims around the Houston area.

According to the Harris County District Clerk’s Office, the FBI and the Sheriff’s Office Financial Crimes Unit are investigating messages demanding payment for a so-called “toll fee” notifying recipients about supposed traffic violations. These messages claim to be from the District Clerk’s Office, but officials have confirmed they are not genuine.
It can be real to fall for it, though, as the messages direct victims to a fraudulent website designed to look like the District Clerk’s Office’s official site. Once there, though, victims are prompted to enter sensitive personal and financial information, including credit card details.
Once a card number is entered, officials say the fake site often rejects it, prompting people to try additional cards. In some cases, several cards then become compromised before victims realize they’ve been had.

For that reason, authorities are recommending that anyone who has attempted payment cancel their cards immediately to prevent fraudulent charges.
Reports also indicate that people in other states are receiving the same scam texts. Residents are urged to ignore these texts, avoid clicking on any suspicious links, and report any fake messages to law enforcement.
Here are other key warnings authorities want the public to remember:
- The District Clerk’s Office never requests payments via text message.
- If you receive one of these messages, do not click on any links or provide personal or financial information.
- For questions regarding our office, call our customer service line at (832) 927-5800.
- People with concerns or questions can also call the Sheriff’s Office at (713) 221-6000.
“The Harris County District Clerk’s Office does not send text messages requesting payment for court costs or fees. Let alone do we collect any payments for toll or traffic violations,” District Clerk Marilyn Burgess stressed. “We want to make sure the public knows these messages are a scam. We urge everyone to remain vigilant and protect their personal information.”
