‘This is probably the worst’: Third Ward homeowner says crime in neighborhood is out of control

HOUSTON – A Third Ward homeowner is questioning safety in his neighborhood after experiencing two incidents in less than two weeks.

Daylan James, who moved into his new home on Tierwester and Drew just eight months ago, told KPRC 2 he’s already considering moving out.

“I’ve lived in some rough communities, but this is probably the worst,” James said.

James said the first break-in happened on August 5 when he wasn’t home. He said a man broke off his gated door knob and threw rocks at his front door.

“He just goes in and takes a shower,” said James. “I was confused on why he did that.”

Two young men behind him appear to record the incident on their cell phone and follow that man in the house.

Ten days later, James said those same two men came back.

“At first I thought they were just walking by. Then I realized it was the same guy, same clothes, same everything,” he said. “One ran, but the other clutched a gun. Next thing I know, he just gets up and starts shooting.”

James estimates 15 to 20 shots were fired. He said he scrambled for cover while calling police.

Houston police said both cases are under investigation.

Public safety in the Third Ward has been a topic of concern.

In April, the Riverside Civic Association released results from a neighborhood survey where residents reported frequent gunshots, theft, and a general lack of safety as their top issues.

Neighbors also said they felt police presence was lacking and response times were too slow. In May, there was a community town hall to address crime and call for more action.

“Being in all the worst communities I’ve been in, I think this is probably the worst,” said James.
