HOUSTON – On Tuesday, we introduced you to 10-year-old Khloe, a fifth grader at Houston ISD’s Gregory Lincoln Education Center who is deaf.
Her godmother reached out to KPRC 2’s Re’Chelle Turner after Khloe missed more than two weeks of school because she wasn’t assigned a bus route.
After our story aired, Turner helped the district resolve a communication issue, and Khole now has a bus route to get her to class.
Before sunrise, our cameras were rolling as Khloe and her godmother, Tisha McCullough, prepared for the big day. Khloe had her hair styled, nails done, and a brand-new backpack for her long-awaited first day.
Tisha couldn’t hide her relief.
“You just don’t understand. We’ll still be sitting here without a bus if it weren’t for you. Think about it. If it weren’t for you putting your foot down, where would we be? Still waiting on the phone call,” she said.
While they waited, the two turned to faith. McCullough explained why getting Khloe back in class was so important.
“Education is necessary, especially for her condition,” she said.
After waiting nearly an hour, the bus finally came, and Khloe’s reaction said it all. She smiled, nodded, and even hugged Turner before climbing aboard.
McCullough also shared her gratitude with a laugh.
“Who came up and showed out…Channel who? Channel 2 News. She did that. She walked that walk and talked that talk,” she stated.
After hugs and kisses, Khloe was finally off to school. For McCullough, it was a huge moment.
“First, let me thank you for helping me get out of that situation. If it wasn’t for you, she wouldn’t be on the bus. Seeing Chloe get on the bus for the first time this morning, I’m happy,” she said.
While waiting for the bus, Turner helped McCullough update Khloe’s contact information in the HISD system. The district says this step is critical for students who may be new, transferring to a different school, or returning after time away.
