TSA updates rules on hair styling tools in luggage due to potential fire risks

Travelers planning to pack hair styling tools in their checked bags may need to think twice.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has updated its policy to ban cordless curling irons and flat irons that contain butane or gas cartridges from checked luggage. Spare gas cartridges are also prohibited.

The concern is that these fuel sources pose a fire risk when stored in airplane cargo holds.

Passengers are still allowed to bring the items in carry-on bags, but only if they have a safety cover that prevents them from accidentally turning on inside luggage.

Travelers are encouraged to check TSA’s “What Can I Bring?” tool before heading to the airport for the latest rules and restrictions.
