HOUSTON – At NRG Stadium, the vibrant culture and deep-rooted traditions of Historically Black College and University (HBCU) marching bands took center stage during the 2025 Pepsi National Battle of the Bands Saturday evening.
The event celebrates the rich heritage of HBCU band culture—an integral part of Black art and music.
HONORING A LEGACY OF MUSIC AND COMMUNITY
Eight distinguished bands performed in front of hundreds of attendees, continuing a decades-long tradition of inspiring pride and unity through musical excellence and performance art. Among this year’s participants was the Jackson State University band, led by Band Director Roderick Little.
Little emphasizes that the event holds significance beyond performance:
A key part of the Battle of the Bands is its role in supporting students financially through scholarships. Jackson State was awarded $50,000 in scholarships this year—an essential resource for students facing financial challenges.
“That goes a long way with helping our students get through school when they have financial woes,” Little explained.
MONTHS OF DEDICATION BEHIND THE SCENES
The preparation for these performances are intense and meticulous. Prairie View A&M Band Director shared insights into the months of hard work leading up to the event.
“We start in mid-July with our freshmen, practicing anywhere from 12 to 16-hour days,” he said.
The intricacy of the band formations, the precision of drum majors, and the energy of majorettes bring musical melodies—from timeless classics to new hits—to life on the field.
LOCAL PRIDE: TEXAS SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY’S OCEAN OF SOUL
Houston’s own Texas Southern University Ocean of Soul marching band proudly took the field dawned in maroon and grey. Their Head Drum Major highlighted the importance of the event beyond music, noting its cultural impact.
“Events like this allow HBCU culture to be seen in a more positive light than how it’s sometimes portrayed. It brings us together as a community-to put on a great show,” said Kamron Hadnot, TSU Ocean of Soul’s head drum major.
