Surge in GMC Sierra 2500 truck thefts rattles Fulshear neighborhood

FULSHEAR, Texas – A recent spike in thefts of GMC Sierra 2500 trucks has left residents of the Fulbrook on Fulshear Creek community on edge. Fulshear Police report multiple thefts and attempts in just one week, reflecting a nationwide trend of rising GMC Sierra truck thefts.

One local resident recounts her harrowing experience with KPRC 2 Reporter Corley Peel after thieves stole her husband’s 2021 GMC Sierra 3500 Denali in under three minutes.

“It was the second day of school. We were getting all the kids ready when my husband came back inside and said, ‘My truck’s gone,’” she recalled.

Surveillance footage from neighbors shows two masked and hooded individuals approaching the home around 3 a.m. on August 14. Although the theft itself wasn’t captured on camera, the resident explained that the thieves cut the horn wires through the grill, broke the door handle, and drove off with the truck in less than three minutes.

“They knew what they were doing. They were professionals,” she said.

Fulshear Police have reported five incidents involving GMC Sierra and GM trucks in the past week—four stolen and one attempted theft. Authorities believe the thieves scout neighborhoods during the day, taking photos before returning in the early morning to steal vehicles.

“It’s scary how fast they can do it. By the time alarms go off, they’re already gone,” the resident said.

The stolen truck was later recovered near Hobby Airport after a tip about suspicious activity. However, it was heavily damaged. The thieves had pulled out and cut the wiring under the dashboard and reprogrammed the key fob, rendering the truck inoperable.

In addition to the truck, the resident’s husband lost $1,500 worth of power tools that were inside the vehicle. Repairs and added security measures, including installing a kill switch and vehicle trackers, are expected to cost thousands.

“We’re installing an anti-theft kill switch so they can’t just cut the wires and start it,” she explained. “We’re also getting trackers and better security systems.”

The Highway Loss Data Institute reports that the GMC Sierra 2500 crew cab 4WD is stolen at a rate more than ten times the national average, making it one of the most targeted vehicles in the country.

Fulshear Police say the reason these trucks are targeted remains unclear, but urge residents to take precautions: park in garages or well-lit areas, lock vehicles, remove key fobs, and consider visible anti-theft devices.

Anyone with information about these thefts is encouraged to contact local authorities.
