Houston Mayor John Whitmire has implemented stronger traffic control measures to protect students walking near Lamar High School.
The mayor visited the intersection of Eastside and Westheimer near the school after learning that a student was struck by an SUV.

Whitmire agreed that the current crosswalk design is flawed. He directed Houston Public Works to start installing a High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK). This system will let students activate a red light to stop traffic and allow them to cross safely.
Mayor Whitmire also instructed the Houston Police Department to work with Houston ISD and METRO Police to strengthen traffic enforcement near the school.
Starting Wednesday, traffic officers were present patrolling the area, and they will remain through the end of the week. Afterward, they will coordinate with other law enforcement agencies to maintain a steady presence.

From Houston ISD’s press office, the district said student safety around campuses is its top priority. Although the crosswalk at Westheimer and Eastside is maintained by the city, HISD Police will increase patrol visibility during arrival and dismissal times.
HISD released the following statement:
“HISD’s top priority is the safety and security of all students in and around campus areas. Although the crosswalk at the intersection of Westheimer and Eastside Streets is maintained by the City of Houston, HISD Police will be increasing patrol visibility in the area during arrival and dismissal times to help raise awareness and keep students safe. This may include traffic warnings and enforcement as needed.
The District continues to work closely with our law enforcement partners and the City of Houston to ensure the safety of our students."
