Inmate who was mistakenly let out of New Orleans Jail found in Cypress

New Orleans inmate mistakenly released (KPRC 2)

CYPRESS, Texas – An inmate who was mistakenly released from a jail in New Orleans last month was arrested in Cypress on Tuesday, according to the Harris County Precinct 5 Constable’s Office.

On July 25, 30-year-old Khalil Bryan was mistakenly released from the Orleans Parish Jail due to a clerical error when authorities mixed him up with another inmate who had the same last name and posted a bond.

Bryan, according to deputies, was facing multiple charges in Louisiana, including home invasion, aggravated assault, child endangerment and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Deputies said Bryan was arrested at a home located in the 14600 block of Keystone Green Drive after they received a tip about his whereabouts.

Bryan reportedly tried to escape through a window and received minor injuries from being bitten by a K9 during an attempted fight.

Two other people who were at the home were also arrested on unrelated warrants, according to deputies.

NOLA.com said the two people arrested were Bryan’s family members and they were booked on firearm and narcotics charges.

Bryan has since been booked into the Harris County Jail. He is expected to be returned to New Orleans to face charges. It’s not clear if Bryan will face new charges.

The release of Bryan reignited criticism of the New Orleans Parish jail and the New Orleans Sheriff’s Office following the escape of 10 inmates months earlier. One escapee, convicted killer Derrick Groves, remains on the run more than three months after that jailbreak.

Two deputies have since been fired and five suspended since Bryan’s release, according to NOLA.com.
