Valero facility in Texas City reports higher SO2 emissions, air monitoring ongoing

Texas City officials are actively monitoring an upset at the Valero facility that caused higher-than-normal sulfur dioxide emissions, prompting temporary road closures and air monitoring.

According to Texas City Emergency Management, the upset involves a unit inside the facility that is releasing SO2. As a precaution, FM 519 to the 605 South Loop has been closed, and the roads are expected to remain closed for a few more hours.

Officials stressed there is no threat to the general public. Texas City Fire Department, Valero, and CTEH crews are at the scene and report that monitoring equipment has not detected SO2 in the community.
