RICHMOND, Texas – Fort Bend County prosecutors have now alleged that County Judge KP George improperly used campaign funds for personal expenses, including property taxes and a home down payment.
The new details emerged in response to a motion filed by George’s defense team aiming to toss the indictment.
In a 25-page filing Monday, attorney Jared Woodfill argued the indictment is flawed, saying, “The indictment is defective in that it fails to allege the essential elements of the offense, lacks the specificity and notice required by law, and attempts to recast non-criminal conduct as money laundering.”
“The case involves an overreaching application of the money laundering statute to ordinary campaign finance reporting,” Woodfill added.
GEORGE’S MOTION TO THROW OUT:
The Fort Bend District Attorney’s office disagrees.
Assistant District Attorney Charann Thompson wrote in a Wednesday response that after George’s first campaign for county judge in 2018, he reported a campaign balance of $399.
However, Thompson stated, “His actual campaign balance was $37,128.94,” and noted that “Two weeks later, the Defendant transferred $30,000 from his campaign account to his personal account.”
The DA’s office said George transferred another $16,500 from his campaign account to his personal account a few months later.
“The Defendant used the money to pay his personal property taxes and toward a down payment on a new house,” Thompson said.
Prosecutors also said George “not only concealed the campaign contribution from his January report but also concealed the transfers from the subsequent campaign finance report.”
They added that George knowingly made “a false entry in a government record.”
PROSECUTOR’S RESPONSE:
George was arrested on April 4 on two counts of felony money laundering.
The DA’s office included a quote from George after his arrest: “There is nothing illegal about loaning personal funds to my own campaign and later repaying that loan.”
George was elected county judge as a Democrat in 2018 and 2022. He recently announced at a news conference, with his attorney by his side, that he is now a Republican.
