Mystery boom: Kingwood residents report ‘homes shaking’ following explosion-like noise in Atascocita area

Harris County Sheriff deletes post identifying possible cause

Residents in the Atasocita and Kingwood area reported that a large explosion caused their homes to shake.

As of this writing, the cause of the explosion remains undetermined.

According to a post by the Atascocita Fire Department, the event was described as an “explosion” and happened at 10:41 a.m. at a house on Burle Oak Drive near Timber Forest Drive in Atascocita.

“I heard what sounded like a sonic boom," said homeowner Ronald Walker. “I was in my recliner. I popped up. I went outside. Me being a veteran firefighter, I came out. I looked around for smoke, did not see any."

Walker said he called for fire and several agencies responded to his house, but this was not where the boom came from.

About a half mile South, Marla Robinson said she heard and felt the bang as well.

“I just heard this loud, very loud boom and it sounded very close, like maybe a few streets away," said Robinson. “I’ve lived in this neighborhood almost 14 years and I never heard anything like that before. "

Our Sky 2 Chopper was over the scene of the residence, and nothing out of the ordinary was seen.

In a post in the “Kingwood, TX,” Public Group on Facebook, residents reported feeling their homes shake. Kingwood residents have contacted KPRC 2 with similar reports, and one woman who was outside on a walk described hearing a sound similar to thunder.

The cause of the loud boom has not been determined at this time. KPRC 2 reporter Jaewon Jung is calling out to nearby residents who may have footage or audio of the explosion.

Around an hour after the “boom,” Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez announced a possible cause, saying:

“We’re aware of reports of a loud boom, that sounded like an explosion in the greater Atascocita/Kingwood area. We believe it’s associated with a community education class hosted by a local fire department at the 20000 blk of Burle Oak Drivr [sic] in Atascocita.”

A short time later, the sheriff’s post was deleted. He then posted the following:

The Atascocita Fire Marshal contacted KPRC 2, clarifying that the local fire training exercises today were water-based. They do not believe there is any possibility the explosion was associated with their activities.

Atasocita Fire also responded to a report of a gas leak in the area but said it is unrelated.

HCSO also reportedly had drones in the air investigating the area of the boom.

KPRC 2 also saw CenterPoint Energy crews out in the scene. A spokesperson from CenterPoint sent us the following:

“CenterPoint Energy is aware of and responded to reports of a loud noise earlier today in the Atascocita area. The cause of the incident remains under investigation. Safety is our top priority, and we will continue to support first responders and emergency officials.”
