‘Underlying technology issue’ resolved after United Airlines departures grounded across the nation

HOUSTON – United Airlines says it is working to get customers to their destinations after a “technology disruption” forced a halt to departures at airports across the nation.

United Airlines had been holding all United mainline flights at their departure airports until the issue was resolved.

Just after 9 p.m. Wednesday, the company said the underlying technology issue had been resolved.

The company says they do expect residual delays, but are working to restore normal operations.

According to the company, the issue began at 5:12 p.m.

United also explained the system impacted is named Unimatic, which houses information about each flight that is then fed to other systems including – for example – those that calculate weight and balance and track flight times.

The outage was not related to recent concerns about cybersecurity in the airline industry.

Statement from United Airlines:

“We are working with customers to get them to their destinations after a technology disruption on Wednesday evening. The underlying technology issue has been resolved, and, while we expect residual delays, our team is working to restore our normal operations.”

United has a list of affected airports on its website. If your flight has been affected, the company says you can reschedule your trip and United will waive change fees and fare differences. But, your new flight must be a United flight departing between August 6, 2025 and August 16, 2025. Tickets must be in the same cabin and between the same cities as originally booked.
