Many people in Harris County don’t realize they qualify for help with essentials like food, healthcare, or utility bills.
For man asking for assistance can be overwhelming and sometimes impersonal, leaving many unsure of where to turn for help.
That’s where Connective, a local nonprofit, steps in. Since November, the organization has helped families claim millions in benefits they didn’t know they were eligible for.
Despite this progress, about $1 billion in government aid goes unclaimed in Harris County each year.

To address this, Connective created an easy-to-use online benefits hub accessible by phone or computer. The tool takes just two minutes to show users what they qualify for — potentially changing lives.
Robert Rincon, a native Houstonian who grew up on the north side, found himself homeless after hard times despite years of work. He discovered help at the Wesley Community Center, one of several organizations partnering with Connective.
“Yes sir, they got me some snacks, a food stamp card, and help with my teeth,” Rincon said. “I got $292 in SNAP benefits, and it’s helping me a lot. I’m just trying to get back on my feet.”
Connective says Robert is one of many Houstonians struggling — some unemployed, others facing eviction, and many unaware of the help available.
“People don’t know about programs or find the applications too hard,” said Elaine Morales, senior director of partnerships and policy at Connective. “Every benefit has different rules and paperwork. If you’re struggling to survive, it’s hard to find time to apply. Our ‘Unlock My Benefits Texas’ initiative makes it easier to see what you qualify for and get help by phone or in person with partners like Harris County Public Health, Catholic Charities, and Wesley Community Center.”
Benefits include food stamps, Medicaid, childcare aid, utility help, and more.
“We had a family eligible for $2,000 in monthly benefits, which adds up to $24,000 a year — that’s life-changing. On average, people can get about $300 a month,” Morales said.
To get started, residents can visit unlockmybenefits.org , answer a few questions, and see what benefits they qualify for. The site shows eligibility, estimated amounts, and links to apply. Those needing extra assistance can call or visit partner centers for help.
At Wesley Community Center and other locations across the city, Connective screeners like Jessica Rangel assist people with applications and documentation.
“I helped Robert fill out the applications and told him what documents he needed,” Rangel said. “We had to schedule a few appointments because he didn’t have all his papers, but some applications let you use letters or online forms.”
For Robert, this support was a lifeline.
“She really helped me a lot. I’ve told my friends and family about this. If you need help, don’t hesitate to reach out,” he said.
Eligibility for benefits varies based on individual circumstances, but for many, the assistance is a game-changer. To learn more about how Connective can help, visit Unlock Your Benefits in 2 minutes
