Based on the book written in 1991, and the movie that came out in 2000, American Psycho the Musical mixes nostalgia, horror, and intrigue with lots of synth music.

Based on the 1991 book and 2001 movie (both with the same name) starring Christian Bale, American Psycho the Musical mixes nostalgia, horror, and intrigue with lots of synth music.

The musical follows the story of Patrick Bateman, a successful young man working on Wall Street who seemingly has the perfect life - good looks, designer clothes, high-profile friends- but when the night rolls around, this facade crumbles to reveal Bateman’s true nature.

Set in 1989 Manhattan, the musical takes place in the mecca of excess and indulgence. Bateman and his friends spend their days visiting the most exclusive restaurants and clubs in New York - little do his friends know, their proximity to Bateman puts them in grave danger.

The show will run from September 2 through September 14 at the Hobby Center on Bagby Street. And unlike the movie, the musical is suitable for ages 16 and up.

“I couldn’t be more excited that Houston Broadway Theatre is bringing American Psycho to bloody life in Houston,” said book writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. “I’m particularly thrilled to be working with director Joe Calarco and the first-class team at HBT on a revised version of our musical, which builds on everything we’ve learned about this piece from its London and Broadway incarnations.”

Originally premiering in London in 2013, American Psycho the Musical has been evolving for almost a decade now. The show debuted on Broadway in April 2016 and concluded later that year in June.

Houston’s upcoming production of American Psycho is the first iteration of the show since its Broadway debut, and will feature a newly revised script and score.

“Premiering this bold, all-new, revised production of American Psycho at Houston Broadway Theatre marks a major artistic milestone for our organization…” said HBT President Tyce Green. “Their decision to entrust HBT with this newly revised script and score speaks volumes about the caliber of work we strive to deliver.”

“Roberto and I have very much enjoyed working with the young and talented team at Houston Broadway Theatre, and we are both looking forward to their new vision of the show,” said book writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. “ It’s sure to deliver a new iteration of the show that is cool, dangerous, thought-provoking, and very entertaining. Maybe bring a translucent raincoat just in case.”

American Psycho: The Musical will premiere at the Hobby Center on September 2 and run through September 14, 2025. Learn more about the show or get tickets by clicking here.
