HOUSTON – Earlier this month, KPRC 2 received a tip from a worker at Hermann Park Golf Course about a notice indicating that BSL Golf, the longtime management company overseeing the course, is in advanced talks with the city to conclude its management responsibilities.
If the discussions conclude as expected, BSL Golf will no longer operate the course, potentially affecting about 50 workers who could lose their jobs.
Hermann Park Golf Course holds a special place in history as the first public golf course in America to welcome all races. Golfers told KPRC 2 that this legacy makes the course worth preserving.
On Tuesday, KPRC 2 spoke with golfers and workers at the course. Members of Hermann Park’s women’s golf association shared a flyer claiming the city might shut down the course to downsize it and add more parking.
“We are the only women’s league on a public course,” said golfer NJ Pierce.
The women said they are preparing for a tournament in October and that a closure would be devastating.
“It’s tiresome having to fight for the golf courses and the greenspace,” said golfer Diane McDonald.
When asked about the future of the historic course, Kenneth Allen, the city’s Park and Recreation director, declined to comment.
City Council member Dr. Carolyn Evans-Shabazz, who represents District D where the course is located, provided a statement:
“At this time, there is no formal comment, as the proposed management and improvement plan for Hermann Park Golf Course is currently under review by the Mayor’s Office. Once the agreement is finalized and approved, complete information will be made available to the public.
Hermann Park Golf Course, a historic and cherished part of our city for more than a century, is expected to undergo course development work that will require a temporary closure. We understand that this may cause uncertainty for employees and longtime patrons. Please know that a transition plan is in place to support staff during this period.
As Council Member for District D, I have met with the Hermann Park Conservancy and remain actively engaged to ensure that any future changes reflect the needs and values of the surrounding community. My office is committed to transparency and will share updates as soon as they become available.”
KPRC 2 also reached out to BSL Golf but did not receive a response.
