Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez confirmed with KPRC 2 that deputies were called to a home on Dunham Lake Drive off Hwy 290 before 12:15 p.m.

That’s where an unidentified toddler was found in the pool, unresponsive and not breathing.

Sheriff Gonzalez later confirmed the toddler passed away.

This is the second death involving a toddler over the weekend, after authorities said a 2-year-old girl was accidentally run over by her brother late Saturday night in southeast Houston.

This also marks the third child to drown in Harris County over the last two weeks.

Just more than a week before, on July 16, a 2-year-old drowned in a retention pond in west Harris County. Then, on July 25, a 5-year-old died after drowning at an apartment complex pool in west Houston.

“One thing that’s so important to me is making sure that our young people and our adults have access to swim safety instructions,” said Houston City Council Member Tiffany Thomas, who hosted a swim safety clinic on Saturday. “Houston had 143 drowning incidents last year. Fourteen were fatal.”

According to a Facebook post by Harris County Constable Precinct 4, Harris County led Texas in child drownings in 2024.

Drowning can be fast and nearly silent. Experts emphasize constant supervision around water, noting that children should always remain within arm’s reach.
