Woman charged with murder after shooting 75-year-old woman collecting aluminum cans, police say

HOUSTON – A 43-year-old woman has been charged with murder after allegedly shooting and killing a 75-year-old woman who was collecting aluminum cans at an apartment complex.

Amber McNulty was initially charged with felon in possession of a weapon but now faces a murder charge. The shooting occurred on July 15 at the Spanish Village Apartments off Griggs Road.

Flowers now lay on the stairs where the victim was shot, just outside the apartment where McNulty lived. Neighbors expressed relief that McNulty is now charged with murder.

“She shot that woman cold blooded,” said an anonymous neighbor.

The neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous, said she called 911 after hearing gunshots.

“I heard something like pow, pow, pow, pow. Then I jumped on the floor. Next thing I know, it got real quiet,” she said.

When she checked outside, she found the woman lying on the stairs. “I said, ‘Ma’am, are you alright?’ She didn’t say anything. I called 911 immediately.”

Houston Police said someone living in the apartment with McNulty had set out aluminum cans for the victim to collect. McNulty allegedly saw the woman collecting cans, put on a ballistic vest, armed herself, and fired at the woman through a window.

McNulty told police she felt threatened and was trying to protect herself. However, the neighbor says she heard McNulty admit to the shooting.

“I killed that [expletive]. She’d been in my house. Sure did. And whoever comes up these stairs, I’m going to kill them too. I ran into my house and shut the door,” the neighbor recalled hearing McNulty say.

The neighbor said the apartment complex will never be the same after this tragedy.

McNulty is currently held in the Harris County Jail. Her next court date is scheduled for July 28.
