Surfing Dogs: How to tell if your pup is ready to catch a wave

Galveston – Surfboards, sun, and four-legged athletes will take over the beach this weekend as the 12th Annual Ohana Surf Dog Competition returns to Galveston Island.

The event, hosted by the Galveston Island Humane Society (GIHS), kicks off at 7:30 a.m. and runs until noon on Saturday, July 19, at 27th Street Beach. Organizers say the event not only brings together pet lovers and beachgoers but also raises money to help care for homeless and neglected animals on the island.

“This is the 12th annual surf competition. It is a dog surfing competition — so no humans. I mean, there’s some assistance from humans, but no humans surfing, just dogs,” said Kristen Thompson, Executive Director of GIHS.

GIHS says all proceeds will go to benefit programs, including adoption efforts, spay and neuter services, and emergency medical care.

Spectators can expect to see dogs of all breeds and sizes showing off their balance and bravery as they ride the waves. The competition has grown steadily over the years, drawing crowds from across the region.

“I can tell you there’s also going to maybe be a miniature horse at the competition,” smiled Thompson. “I don’t know if he’ll be participating, but he will definitely be there.”

Thompson told KPRC 2’s Zorrie Jones that the Galveston Fire Department will be on hand to fill up kiddie pools, giving dogs a chance to cool off between heats.

“You’ll see dogs frolicking like little puppy mermaids,” she said.

In addition to the surf heats, the event will also feature vendor booths, food, and family-friendly beach activities.

“We have a lot more new sponsors this year and some fresh faces — including me. You’ll see new community partners coming out to support the event and get involved,” Thompson added.

She also noted that adoptable dogs will be at the event for those interested in giving a pet a forever home.
