Officials in Harris County are encouraging the public to participate in discussions and studies in the aftermath of the Hill Country floods.

There will be a series of public scoping meetings this summer hosted by the Harris County Flood Control District for the Solutions for Advancing Floodplain Evaluation and Resilience Study, known as the SAFER Study.

The studies are being conducted in partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The studies are aiming to identify large-scale ways to reduce flood risk across the region.

“Flood risk affects all of us, and your input is essential to shaping effective, community-focused solutions,” a statement from officials read. “Whether you’ve experienced flooding firsthand or just care about the future of our community, this is your opportunity to attend a meeting, submit a comment, or visit our website to take part in this process.”

The public meetings will offer an opportunity to learn about the study, ask questions, and share concerns and ideas. Feedback gathered will help guide the study’s focus and future work.

In-person meetings will be formatted as open houses, allowing attendees to drop by anytime during open hours.

Visitors can view exhibits, speak one-on-one with study team members, and provide input to guide the effort. To accommodate the diverse community, meeting materials and interpretation services will be available in Spanish, Vietnamese and Mandarin.

“The real focus of these meetings is having targeted conversations about what works in certain areas. We want to make sure that we’re hearing what people have experienced,” Emily Woodell, the chief external affairs officer with the Harris County Flood Control District said at Saturday’s event.

The first meeting happened on Saturday, July 12, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Steve Radack Community Center in Houston.
