KINGWOOD, Texas – During times of tragedy, people step up in many ways. Some volunteer for search and rescue. Others collect food, supplies and clothing.

In Kingwood, four young girls are doing their part by organizing a bake sale to raise money for victims of the devastating floods in Texas Hill Country.
The Hill Country floods, caused by heavy rains over the July 4 weekend, led to widespread damage and loss of life.
The girls — Everly Dickens, Lennon Adcock, Annie Laney and Evelyn Kennedy — are best friends between the ages of 9 and 10.
“We heard about the flood and thought, ‘Oh, it’s just so sad,’” Evelyn said. “I went to a sleepaway camp just a couple weeks ago, and when I heard about girls just like me who had that happen to them, it made me so sad.”
They plan to sell an assortment of items, including cookies, dirt and worms (a dessert), lemonade and cake balls.
“We made a lot of stuff,” Annie said. “We’re selling everything for a dollar each.”
Their goal is to raise money to donate to flood relief efforts through churches and other organizations.
“These families lost their kids and their family and their pets,” Everly said. “It feels good to give money to them and make them feel better a little bit.”
Their efforts wouldn’t be possible without the help of their mothers. Sarah Kennedy said explaining the tragedy that happened over the July 4 weekend was difficult, but Evelyn and her friends responded as any parent would hope.
“We just sat and talked about how there’s tragedy in the world, and that we serve a really big, great God who is near and will work through people to help others,” Kennedy said. “That’s really where this whole thing came about — her seeing that we can do good and be good in our world.”
The girls have already raised about $1,600 with help from family and friends who wanted to give them a jump start. The actual bake sale is set for Thursday, July 10.
It will take place at Foster’s Mill Village Park, starting at 12:30 p.m. and lasting until they run out of goodies.
The park is located at 2412 Elk Creek Drive, Kingwood, Texas.
