Houston residents continue to experience problems with late garbage and recycling pickup, but new concerns have emerged about the city’s solid waste department’s bin repair and replacement program.
Jim Sandt has dealt with a leaky garbage can for nearly two months. Despite repeated requests, the city has not fixed or replaced it.
“So we pile it up in our garage in plastic bags or outside, or we put it in our neighbors. They help us out,” Sandt said.
Many neighbors face similar struggles, according to 311 service records. Investigations uncovered numerous requests for bin repairs that expired and were closed without the problems being resolved.
New residents have also reported problems securing household garbage and recycling bins in a timely manner. Both categories, receive an ‘F’ rating on the city’s own 311 dashoboard that monitors resolutions.

When asked about the poor performance of the bin replacement program, the mayor’s office forwarded inquiries to the solid waste department. However, there has been no response from solid waste as of now.
