Elderly woman dead after fire at north Houston home

An elderly woman died after being involved in a house fire on Houston’s northside Thursday afternoon.

The blaze was reported at around 3:30 p.m. in the 700 block of Pickering Street.

No firefighters were injured in the inicident.

Shortly after 6 p.m. HFD confirmed that firefighters were responding to another call when they noticed the smoke from the unrelated fire on Pickering Street.

When first responders arrived, they found flames coming from the rear of the home. Neighbors said they believed an elderly woman was inside.

After an intense search, the woman—who was 95 years old—was found and taken out of the burning home. She had died from her injuries.

KPRC 2’s Corley Peel spoke to the victim’s son. He said his mother was a pillar of the community, being fondly known as “Miss Berryman” by the congregation at the church she attended.

Arson investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire.
