HOUSTON – It’s an issue that KPRC 2 has been covering for a while, Houston residents complaining of their overflowing recycling bins with seemingly no pickups in sight.

Recently, KPRC 2’s Joy Addison spoke with residents in the Spring Branch area, who have taken to platforms like Nextdoor and Facebook to voice their frustrations, sharing photos and pleas for help as their recycling piles up.

“It’s been almost a month,” said Mark Capper, a Spring Branch homeowner. “We had a graduation party, stocked up on drinks, paper plates, and napkins. When the city didn’t pick up our recycling, the bin overflowed and we had to start piling things in the garage.”

In response to the issues, the City of Houston Solid Waste Department cited the fact that 46 trucks in the city’s aging fleet are currently inoperable. A purchase of 34 new trucks has been approved, but officials say it could take six to eight months before those vehicles are operational.

The Spring Branch area is not the only area where residents have voiced frustrations about missed pickups.

“It’s been inconsistent, they tell you they’re going to pick them up on a certain day, and they don’t,” one resident of The Heights told KPRC 2’s Joel Eisenbaum back in January.
