Houston man dies after being pulled from water in Galveston

Officials say the man and his wife were boogie boarding in rough water

A 55-year-old Houston man drowned in Galveston Sunday morning while boogie boarding with his wife, according to Galveston Island Beach Patrol.

Officials say the couple was in the water near 31st Street when they got tired and tried to make their way back to shore. The man’s wife made it safely but lost sight of her husband and called 911 around 8:35 a.m.

Galveston police, fire, EMS, and Beach Patrol responded to the scene. A lifeguard spotted the man floating near 24th Street at 9:09 a.m. He was pulled from the water, taken to a hospital, and later pronounced dead at 9:49 a.m.

Officials noted the beach was under a red flag warning at the time. This marks the fifth drowning on Galveston Island so far this year.
