Parents charged with murder after baby found dead in Harris County motel drawer

Over a year after a 4-month-old baby girl was found unresponsive inside a motel room drawer, her parents have been arrested and charged with murder.

Destiny Campos, 22, and Jeremy Fancher, 39, were taken into custody this month, more than a year after their infant daughter, Brookelynn, was discovered lifeless at a Days Inn motel in May of last year. Authorities pronounced the child dead at the scene.

Brookelynn’s maternal grandmother, Luann Simon, says she is relieved to see charges finally filed — but deeply disturbed it took this long.

“I got a call on Memorial Day… they were at the motel where my granddaughter was staying and that the baby had passed away,” Simon said “They had found methamphetamines in the room.”

Disturbing Details in Court Records

According to charging documents, Campos told investigators that Fancher would place the baby in a drawer and seal it shut with a towel to prevent her from kicking it open.

The documents also say a hotel housekeeper reported seeing Brookelynn in the drawer on multiple occasions while the family — which also included an 18-month-old boy — lived there. The housekeeper said Campos was often asleep, and she had difficulty waking her. She said she took photos of the child in the drawer and alerted hotel management, urging them to intervene.

Simon revealed that shortly after the baby’s death, Campos moved in with her.

“She told me it wasn’t the first time they put that baby in a dresser drawer,” Simon said. “When they wanted alone time or wanted her quiet, they would shut her in there.”

A Delayed Response

Simon expressed frustration with law enforcement, saying authorities should have arrested the parents immediately after the baby’s death.

“They have been living their lives like nothing ever happened,” she said. “They should’ve been charged with the drugs at the scene and held on those charges until the homicide charges were ready.”

Asked what justice would look like for her family, Simon replied:

“The death penalty would be too easy. I’d like to see them spend the rest of their lives behind bars, thinking about it every day.”

Campos Now Seven Months Pregnant

Adding another layer to the case, charging documents confirm that Campos is currently seven months pregnant with another baby girl, fathered by a new partner.
