High rip current risk & extreme UV index

HOUSTON – It’s the first full weekend of summer which means many folks are headed to the coast! If you are going to the beach there are a few things you should know. The UV forecast is extreme and there’s a high rip current risk.

Coastal Weather Forecast:

If you’re going to Galveston Island today, it’s going to be a warm and humid one. Temperatures will steadily climb into the upper-80s. When you factor in that humidity, it’s going to feel closer to 100°. There is a 20% chance for a passing shower or storm but it will not be a washout! This is what you can expect all weekend. Highs in the upper 80s, high humidity and an isolated chance of thunderstorms. All around a very typical June forecast!

Water Conditions:

If you’re planning to hop in the waves to try and beat the heat, please be careful! We have winds from the SE at 10-15mph and a high rip current risk. This means if you’re bringing kiddos to the beach you need to watch them close. It’s also a good idea to go over rip current safety with your family, here’s a refresher from our Chief Meteorologist Anthony Yanez on how to survive a rip current if you do get pulled out into the water.

Our water temperatures just off Galveston is 84° which will feel very comfortable. The surf will be a bit choppy between 2-3 feet. Don’t forget to slather on the sunscreen, our UV index is extreme!
