According to court documents, Bowers was stopped while on his way to Austin. During the stop, he told a trooper he had a handgun in his vehicle.
While Governor Greg Abbott later told Austin NBC-affiliate KXAN that a person was “on the Capitol grounds with a gun,” DPS has not confirmed that detail, and records reviewed by KPRC 2 indicate Bowers was detained before reaching Austin.
Fayette County officials confirmed Bowers was held on a misdemeanor traffic charge for not having a front license plate and placed on a 48-hour investigative hold. That hold expired Monday, and Bowers was released from custody without being transferred to another agency.
At this time, no charges have been filed in connection to the Capitol threat. The investigation remains open.
