The Capitol and surrounding grounds were temporarily closed Saturday afternoon after officials evacuated the area.

Officials say this threat was directed at lawmakers expected to attend a protest scheduled to take place at the Texas State Capitol Complex later Saturday.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the threat was identified earlier in the day by its Capitol Region.

The evacuation happened around 1 p.m., and both the Capitol building and its grounds remain temporarily closed.

Officials haven’t shared the nature of the threat or who may have been behind it.

DPS says the investigation is still active, and no further details are being released at this time.

The department said it’s working closely with local, state, and federal partners to assess the situation and keep Texans safe, especially as protests and gatherings continue in the area.

In a statement, DPS emphasized its responsibility to protect people and property across Texas, noting it will continue to monitor events statewide and adjust staffing and security as needed.
