Miles was appointed as superintendent by the Texas Education Agency in 2023, and his extension comes as the TEA announced plans to continue state oversight, through their handpicked board of managers, of HISD through 2027.
Thursday’s meeting was a first for four newly appointed board members who all approved Miles’ extension.
In a statement Thursday, board president Ric Campo said with STAAR testing improvements, “it is clear that under his leadership, our schools and students are making extraordinary academic progress.”
“Biology improved by 23 points in two years, Algebra by 17, English I by 5, English II by 8, and U.S. History by four,” said Miles.
The district is also touted STAAR results for third through eighth grade in math. The percentage points show that HISD outperformed the state in three of six categories and tied in another. However, reading, while improved, still lagged behind the state in the three through eighth grade levels according to numbers presented by the district.
The district posted a copy of Miles’ contract Friday afternoon, which is above.
The contract is effective as of June 12, 2025, and extends Miles’ employment through June 30, 2030.
Miles’ base salary will increase from $380,000 annually to $462,000 after July 1, 2025.
HISD Board of Managers President Ric Campo statement:
“Today, the HISD Board of Managers approved a new contract for Superintendent Mike Miles. With the recent release of STAAR exam results, it is clear that under his leadership, our schools and students are making extraordinary academic progress. The five-year term of the contract ensures that Houston ISD can continue its transformation for the duration of the state intervention, while allowing for continuity and a smooth transition when the District returns to local control. The new contract also maintains rigorous evaluation criteria and compensation that aligns the HISD superintendent position with comparable school districts in Texas.
The HISD Board is proud of the incredible success of HISD students, and with Superintendent Miles’ ongoing leadership, we look forward to continued progress."
