Houston area international floral champion and owner of Fulshear Floral Design, Ace Berry, recently won a big award at the Chelsea Flower Show in London.
The popular show is attended by royalty and celebrities.
Berry is now up for the prestigious People’s Choice award.
With so many family events coming up, graduations, parties and holidays, KPRC2’s Sofia Ojeda caught up with Berry at the HEB in Katy to see how easy it is for moms and dads on the go to grab bunches of flowers and make stunning and affordable bouquets at home.
“What I would suggest is find your first main color that you’re going to go with and we’re going to build off of that color. I‘m really in love with this peach tone if you see how it kind of complements and it’s got just a little bit of yellow that will pull out the solidago,” says Ace Berry as he walks through the floral section of HEB.
“What really stands out to you?” asks Berry.
“I need this. I love peonies, absolutely adore them. Either the blush or the light pink might work with this,” says KPRC2’s Sofia Ojeda.
“This one right here, that’s a perfect color palette,” adds Berry.
“I love this one, what is that, this is a mini calla and this will give a nice draping effect, you can do so many tricks with this, you can peel it and make it curl and get a good draping effect,” says Berry.
“The great thing about HEB is that they always have a great variety of foliage. We have leather leaf and we have this gorgeous lemon leaf with this Israeli ruscus. I would say we should get one of each,” says Berry.
“So are we ready? Let’s get started! Here we go!” says Berry.
“Whenever you’re getting any of your bunches when you’re coming to HEB, you always want to strip off all the foliages..really? Yes, we want to condition our flowers; we want them to last. If this goes into a vase of water, it’s going to create bacteria,” adds Berry.
“The first thing we need to do is we need to divide up what we’re going to use so we have enough for both. This arrangement is roughly a little bigger than my hand so we’re going to need four roses and then we’re going to build out just like that,” said Berry.
“A few of these ranunculus, great, great flowers. The secret to flower arranging is the important thing, just to smile. I’m pulling that down I’m cleaning off the stem and we’re going to insert here. So we have a good balance of nice different textured greenery,” says Berry.
“One of the big secrets of flower arrangements is you just want to rotate so you can see where else you need to be at. And there you go, a gorgeous flower arrangement so fast,” says Berry.
“The secret to making a good traditional spiral hand tied is having everything laid out. You’re going to take one, take your next one, lay it over, next one three lay it over and you just work down the line. We want to give it a fresh cut. This is how we’re going to wrap it to take to our friends and we’ll put a nice little bow on it,” says Berry.
“About 60 bucks! That’s amazing! Two bouquets for 60 dollars! And these look exceptional,” said Ojeda and Berry.
We were able to put together two gorgeous bouquets from the bunches of HEB flowers,, totaling about 60$.
The individual bunches cost anywhere from $3.98 a bunch to 14.98 a bunch, depending on the flower. HEB has a huge variety.
And Berry adds there is no right or wrong way when making your own flower bouquets, just remember to smile!
