How Houston teens can volunteer, make a difference this summer

Summer is the perfect time for Houston teens to step up, volunteer, and make a positive impact in their community.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston: Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston is helping teens build brighter futures through Remote Teen Club. This program equips young people with leadership skills, career exploration opportunities, and post-secondary readiness resources. In addition to in-person activities like career simulations, workforce panels, and college visits, BGCGH is launching a Remote Teen Club in 2025 to reach even more teens across Greater Houston. The online program offers career exploration tools, skill-building content, and connections to local industries.

Opening Doors Teen Mentor Program: Hosted by the Houston Parks and Recreation Department, the Opening Doors Teen Mentor Program is an 8-week summer program for teens ages 14-17. Participants take part in community service projects, mentor younger peers, and sharpen leadership, college, and career-readiness skills. The program includes resume building, city leader interviews, and free enrollment in the HPARD Jr. Lifeguard Program. Sessions run June 16–August 7, Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Judson Robinson, Jr. Community Center. Space is limited and a virtual interview is required for consideration.

Children’s Museum Houston – Discovery Squad: Teens ages 14–17 can get involved this summer through Discovery Squad, the Children’s Museum Houston’s youth leadership and volunteer program. Members assist with exhibits, activities, and special programs while developing leadership and communication skills in a fun, fast-paced environment. A minimum of 75 volunteer hours is required, with opportunities available during the summer and school year.

Sugar Land SciTeen Program: Teens entering 9th–12th grade can dive into science education through the Sugar Land SciTeen Program at the Houston Museum of Natural Science at Sugar Land. Volunteers lead interactive demonstrations, engage with visitors, and build valuable skills for future careers and college applications. Participants commit to at least 4 weeks over the summer, with a chance to connect with like-minded peers and explore diverse areas of natural science. (Summer 2025 applications are closed, but interest forms for 2026 are now available.)

Houston Food Bank – Youth Volunteer Opportunities: The Houston Food Bank welcomes student volunteers and youth groups year-round to help fight hunger and serve the community. Teens and kids ages 6 and up can volunteer in the Portwall Warehouse, while those 16 and older can assist in the Keegan Kitchen. Shifts are available daily, and participants can earn verified volunteer hours for school or service organizations. Group reservations are required, and a safety-first dress code applies.

Houston Zoo – Zoo Crew Explorers: Teens ages 13–17 can dive into the world of wildlife conservation through the Houston Zoo’s Zoo Crew Explorers program. This four-week summer program offers hands-on experience in animal care, guest education, and conservation careers. (Applications for 2025 are now closed, but keep an eye out next spring for 2026 sign-ups!)
