Off-duty Harris County Pct. 2 sergeant killed after being hit by suspected drunk driver while riding bicycle

A Harris County Pct. 2 sergeant has died after he was hit by a suspected drunk driver while riding his bicycle.

Several hours after the death was announced, Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as Manuel Edwards, a 55-year-old sergeant with Harris County Precinct 2 Constable’s Office.

The accident happened at 8:12 a.m. Tuesday morning in the 11500 block of Gaston Road in Katy. The sergeant was off duty and riding a bicycle when he was struck by a U-Haul vehicle.

Edwards was flown to Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Medical Center. Shortly after the he was transported, KPRC 2 captured a heavy law enforcement presence at Memorial Hermann.

The driver of the U-Haul that struck Edwards was identified as Earlie Gibbs, 63. He has been charged with failure to stop and render aid and intoxication manslaughter.
