Based on preliminary evidence, police said the shooter, a 34-year-old unhoused man, was sleeping in a makeshift bed when a woman “with a large stick brandished as a club” walked over to him and stole a backpack with all his belongings.

The man woke up and fired several shots at her, killing her, and took out a cell phone from inside his backpack and called 911.

Police have not identified the shooter, but said he stayed at the scene and “has been cooperative with investigators.”
