The No. 2 Texas Longhorns’ college baseball season came to a close Sunday, when the team fell to UTSA by a score of 7-4.

Texas started the day in the Austin Regional with an elimination game against Kansas State. After jumping out to a big early lead, the Longhorns held on and closed the door against their former conference opponent with a 15-8 win.

Next up, the Longhorns faced the UTSA Roadrunners, a team that placed them on the brink of elimination Saturday. In yesterday’s win, the Roadrunners dug their way out of a 6-1 deficit to steal a 9-7 upset win.

In the rematch, the UTSA was the team to jump out in front early. Senior Norris McClure got the scoring started with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning. Then in the third, the Roadrunners rallied to add five more runs and extend their lead to 7-0.

UTSA’s offense would slow down after that, and the Longhorns chipped away, scoring a run in the fourth and eighth innings. The eighth inning run came from a solo homer by Kimble Schuessler that made it a 7-2 ballgame.

In the top of the ninth with two outs, the Longhorns had their backs against the wall. With a runner at second, junior Max Belyeu hit a homer into right field to make it a three-run ballgame and give the Longhorns hope.

However, the next Texas batter would strike out to seal the win for UTSA.

The Roadrunners will advance to the Super Regionals, which are slated to begin June 6.

Texas head coach Jim Schlossnagle’s first season in Austin will conclude with an impressive 44-14 overall record, including a 22-8 mark in SEC play.
