Chevron is laying off more than 200 employees in Texas as it prepares to cut up to 20 percent of its global workforce by the end of next year.

KPRC 2 first reported the company’s planned layoffs back in February.

Back in March, the energy giant notified the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) of its upcoming workforce reduction of around 700 employees at its Downtown Houston location.

Then in May, Chevron informed the TWC of an additional anticipated workforce reduction of approximately 200 employees in Midland, Texas.

The first layoffs covered by the WARN Notice for Downtown Houston began on May 28 and will continue throughout 2025. For Midland, the first layoffs will commence on July 15 and also extend through 2025.

Chevron is implementing these layoffs as part of a strategy to “simplify its organizational structure and enhance its long-term competitiveness.”

The company stated that this initiative includes optimizing its portfolio, leveraging technology for improved productivity, and altering how and where work is conducted, with an emphasis on expanding global centers.

The company anticipates that these actions will lead to global workforce reductions of 15 to 20 percent, with some local variances.

This initiative aligns with Chevron’s previous announcement of targeted structural cost reductions of $2 to $3 billion by the end of 2026, with some residual impacts expected in 2027 and beyond.

In addition to Texas, Chevron expects workforce reductions in other locations, including San Ramon, El Segundo, Richmond, and Bakersfield in California; Denver, Colorado; and Ames, Iowa.
