Houston woman drowns while swimming with friends in Galveston

A 25-year-old Houston woman drowned early Wednesday morning while swimming with friends off the Galveston seawall, according to Galveston Island Beach Patrol.

Officials said they were called to the area near Tower 24 around 12:45 a.m. for a report of a missing swimmer. The woman had been swimming with two friends when a wave hit the group. Her friends made it safely back to shore, but when they realized she was no longer with them, a bystander called 911.

Multiple agencies, including the Galveston Police Department, Fire Department, EMS, and Beach Patrol, responded to the scene. The victim was located in the water at 12:49 a.m. and CPR was started immediately.

She was taken to the UTMB Emergency Room, where she was pronounced dead at 1:32 a.m.

Lt. Austin Kirwin said there’s no indication of foul play, adding that the woman had been swimming with friends when a wave hit the group.

No further details about the woman’s identity have been released.
