A Houston police officer will spend another birthday giving back to the homeless community.

Every year for the past three years, Houston police officer Sheldon Theragood has held an outreach event for unhoused individuals living across the Houston area, as part of his non-profit Theragood Deeds.

Theragood says that through his work as a police officer, he realized so much more could be done to help those living on the streets. That’s why he began the Homeless Outreach Festival.

“Come out and hug somebody, you can go out there and talk to them, you can build a relationship, let them know how you feel, I have stories just like they have stories,” he explained. “It’s a purpose, God put me here for a reason, to give back and always do for others.”

The event brings resources together in one event.

“Every year, I created this birthday for my friends out on the streets,” Theragood added. “I wanted them to have fun, come out of their comfort zone, and celebrate.”

Folks can get help with insurance, getting IDs, and mental health resources, as well as checkups and assistance with sobriety. There will also be free showers, free food, free haircuts, live entertainment, and some fun.

“I went on the streets when I was 16 and I had nobody as a role model, and that’s why I look up to Officer Sheldon as a role model,” says Mike.

“This man shows compassion, this man shows compassion for others,” adds Dwayne, who is also unhoused. “Not only does he step outside of his line of duty, he goes beyond, he has great compassion for others out here.”

The festival will be held on Saturday, May 31, at the St. Joseph Clubhouse, 3307 Austin Street, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
