La Porte man and grandson found dead after small plane crash in Chambers County

Chambers County – A grandfather and his grandson were found dead Sunday morning after their small plane crashed in a wooded area near Hankamer, Texas.

Chambers County Sheriff’s Office says the small plane, red and white low-wing Commander, had last been tracked on Saturday afternoon just before 5 p.m., when data showed a sudden drop in altitude.

The two on board were identified as Larry Motte of La Porte and his grandson, who was visiting from Austin.

Search crews began looking for the missing plane late Saturday night after authorities received a report of a possible crash near FM 1724, just south of Interstate 10.

The effort included teams from the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Game Wardens, the Texas Department of Public Safety, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Drones, helicopters, and ground crews were used to search through the night.

The wreckage was found Sunday morning in a remote wooded area near the plane’s last known location. Both Larry Motte and his grandson were found dead at the scene.

Federal officials with the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are now investigating the cause of the crash.

The family is asking for privacy and prayers during this difficult time.
