Officials said the dogs had chewed holes through the walls of the rundown three-bedroom home in the 19000 block of Cypress Canyon Drive. Parts of the house were filled with standing water, and some windows had been boarded up.

Investigators also discovered the remains of three other dogs in various stages of decay inside the property. The rescued dogs were taken into Houston SPCA custody for medical treatment and ongoing care.

Investigators later identified the owners, who reportedly abandoned the home on May 10.

A hearing to decide whether they will be allowed to reclaim the animals is set for Wednesday. Precinct 1 officials added that the results of an ongoing criminal investigation will be submitted to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office for review and potential charges.
