Texas among first states to consider mandatory coverage for menopause

In recent years, menopause and perimenopause have gone from being health topics where little was understood about the evolving female body, to being a subject with such a huge following, books about it remain on the New York Time’s Best Seller list.

Now, in an unprecedented move, Texas is one of 13 states proposing legislation to mandate coverage of menopause treatments.

No, ladies, the symptoms are not in your head. And yes, there are treatments.

The way it stands right now, a lot of treatments aren’t accessible. Therapies can involve bloodwork, medications and/or hormone replacements, which can cost hundreds of dollars a month.

According to the Mayo Clinic, our economy loses an estimated $1.8 billion annually because menopause symptoms are pushing people to miss work.

Now thanks to awareness of peri/menopause, that half of the population has been dealing with forever (as long as they live long enough), lawmakers are looking into policies that would make coverage for treatment mandatory.

So far the bills range from paid leave proposals to public health campaigns requiring menopause training for health care providers.
