Montgomery County Precinct 1 Constables’ Lake Patrol says the man, who was with relatives visiting from different parts of the U.S., jumped into the water for a swim after dropping the boat’s anchor. But he didn’t realize how deep the water was—about 35 feet—and the anchor didn’t hold.

As the wind picked up, the boat began to drift. The man tried to swim after it but struggled and eventually slipped under the surface. He never came back up.

Authorities say someone on the boat quickly called 911, and multiple agencies rushed to the scene, including Montgomery County Precinct 1 Constables’ Lake Patrol, Texas Parks and Wildlife, and fire crews from Montgomery and Conroe.

Divers recovered the man’s body just after 7 p.m.

Officials confirmed this is the first drowning reported on Lake Conroe this year.
