Crosses memorializing 2022 Uvalde school shooting victims vandalized

FILE - Flowers and candles are placed around crosses on May 28, 2022, at a memorial outside Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, to honor the victims killed in the school shooting. Texas schools could offer $25,000 stipends to teachers and staff who take on the dual role of becoming armed campus “sentinels” under a proposal advanced Tuesday, April 25, 2023, by state lawmakers in response to the Uvalde classroom attack last year. The crosses, placed by grieving families to honor the 19 children and two teachers killed in the May 24, 2022, school shooting, were damaged in what police are calling a “senseless” and “cruel” act. Seventeen others were injured in the shooting, which remains the deadliest school shooting in Texas history.

“This act is not only senseless, it is cruel, and it has inflicted more pain on families who have already endured unimaginable loss,” the department said in a Facebook post.

Police said they are actively working to identify those responsible. In the post, they assured families and residents: “We see you, we stand with you, and we share your heartbreak.”

The department added that Robb Elementary is more than a location. It is “a symbol of sorrow, resilience, and remembrance,” and violating it is seen as a violation of the spirit of Uvalde itself.

“We will not tolerate these continued attacks on the dignity of our community,” police said. “We remain committed to protecting this community—with compassion, with integrity, and with unwavering resolve.”
