A Denton County Commissioner was injured, and her husband was killed after they were stabbed overnight by their grandson, according to Lewisville police.
On Monday morning around 3:53 am, officers responded to a 911 call reporting an assault in the 1000 block of Springwood Drive. When officers arrived, they discovered two victims, a woman and a man, who had been stabbed. The victims were identified as longtime Denton County Commissioner Bobbie Mitchell and her husband Fred Mitchell.
Officers immediately arrested their 23-year-old grandson, Mitchell Blake Reinacher, after discovering the two victims. The victims were rushed to the hospital. The female victim, Bobbie, was in stable condition, but her husband Fred died from his injuries, police said.
The Lewisville police stated that Reinacher didn’t struggle before being taken into custody. Officers were able to recover the weapon believed to be used in the stabbing, a serrated kitchen knife, from the scene. When officers asked why he did this to his family, he declined to answer. According to police, this isn’t the first time they have come into contact with the suspect, but they did not speak on his past criminal history.
Mitchell’s children shared this statement, which in part says, “Our wonderful mother is expected to recover. We will provide updates for the funeral service for our beloved father.”
Bobbie Mitchell’s stabbing has shocked the community and left many residents questioning why. Mrs. Mitchell, who has represented Precinct 3 of the Denton County Commissioners Court for the last 25 years, also served as a Lewisville city council member and was the first Black mayor of the city in 1993, the release stated.
A prayer vigil was held Monday night in honor of Bobbie Jo Mitchell at Westside Baptist Church in Lewisville. As she continues to recover, community members are standing with her in spirit and support.
The Lewisville police chief says detectives are working to learn what happened in the hours before the attack.
