Sheriff Ed Gonzalez first shared the message on X, where an unidentified man was firing his weapon around 7:30 a.m. from his apartment balcony on Dancy Road in the Westbranch area off the Sam Houston Tollway.

When officers arrived, investigators at the scene told KPRC 2’s Re’Chelle Turner they spent more than two hours trying to de-escalate the situation using drones, robots, and chemical munitions. At the same time, deputies worked to obtain an arrest warrant.

But officials say the man eventually emerged still armed and posed a continued threat to both law enforcement and the public.

At some point, the gunman pointed his pistol at deputies and shot at them, prompting four SWAT members to fire their weapons back. No officers were injured, but the man died at the scene.

We’re told the man also did not have a criminal background nor a history of mental illness, but it’s unclear what led up to his actions beforehand.

The Harris Co. Sheriff’s Office’s Crime Scene Unit, Internal Affairs, and the District Attorney’s Office are all conducting independent investigations—as is standard protocol for any officer-involved shooting. HCSO said it will release body camera footage within 30 days.
