Katy woman says she was duped into paying $3K for spa subscription

KATY, Texas – A woman who went to get some relief at a spa in Katy found herself more stressed than when she walked in after somehow ending up with a $3,000 loan she says she never signed up for.

We first learned about this after Daphne Hennessey reached out to 2 Helps You and my photojournalist and I drove out to Katy to learn more about what happened and see what we could do to help her out.

Hennessey tells me she found an ad on Facebook for a facial treatment costing $59 at Ola and Aesthetic Spa on Barker Cypress. She read some good reviews and decided to check them out.

“Well they kind of sneakily—without telling me—took out a loan in my name for a treatment it was for over $3,000," Hennessey explained. “I thought I was going to pay you as I come and get treatments, and this is not what’s going on and I don’t want this loan.”

Once she realized what happened, Hennessey said they told her it would take 7 days to get a refund and to come back in a week. She waited the entire week and still no refund. So she reached out again.

“I’m an emotional wreck, it’s the last thing I needed,” Hennessey said.

We made our way to the spa to try and talk to the owner and hear their side of the story, where the owner explained Hennessey purchased a package of 12 spa treatments and several skin care products totaling $2,598.

He said he did explain what she was purchasing and informed her on the loan she was filling out. The owner then asked me to call Hennessey and tell her to come back to the spa for a full refund.

Moments later, she was happy to share the good news with us.

“It says ‘Your refund has been processed,‘” Hennessey said. “It would never have happened if you hadn’t come out and spoken to them, because they were adamant no refund and I was upset because they truly never told me I was signing up for a loan.”

Many spas offer a monthly subscription package that can include a certain number of treatments, plus facial products. To ensure something like this does not happen to you here are some things to be aware of:

  • Be sure to fully understand what you are signing up for.
  • Do not under any circumstance fill out a form or sign something before you have looked over the documents.
  • Even if you’ve looked at the forms, it doesn’t hurt to maybe have a friend or family member also look over them before you commit to a subscription.

In Hennessey’s case, she really thought she understood she would pay for her treatments as she received them, but it ended up being a year long subscription instead.
