Basketball fans soak in Alamo City as Houston Cougars head to national championship

The Cougars will play the Florida Gators Monday night. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:50 p.m.

Cougar pride resonated throughout San Antonio as fans celebrated the Houston Cougars’ big win. Many spent the day enjoying the city’s sights with family, friends, and fellow supporters.

Saturday night, the top-seeded Cougars took down top-seed Duke in a thrilling Final Four matchup between bracket heavyweights.

The Cougars’ win was far from expected. Not only did the Blue Devils enter the game as the betting favorite, but they led by 14 points with just over eight minutes left to play.

Despite facing almost certain defeat, the Coogs clawed their way back into it. A sequence of Duke blunders and strong Houston defense in the game’s final seconds allowed the Cougars to escape with a historic 70-67 victory.

Benjamin Bova, a dedicated Cougars fan, expressed his excitement after the win.

“Checking out the Alamo, going around the River Walk, you know, yelling ‘Whose house? Coogs house!’ to all the U of H fans,” he said.

For some, this trip marks not only their inaugural visit to the Alamo but also their first experience watching the Cougars advance to a national championship.

Craig Alexander, a former wide receiver at U of H during the Andre Ware era, was in town with his family.

“We’ve been to San Antonio a number of times, but this is different,” Alexander said. “This is special.”

The Cougar faithful told KPRC 2 that today was all about relaxing, sightseeing, and conserving energy for tomorrow’s national championship game against the fellow-one-seed Florida Gators.

“Fortunately, things turned around. Now we have a nice Sunday, enjoying the river, and then we are going to the pep rally to root on the Coogs,” one fan shared.

The pep rally will take place at Alamo Plaza at 6 p.m., and everyone is invited to join in the festivities.
