Houston Area Women’s Center launches new facility to help survivors rebuild their lives
The Houston Area Women’s Center unveiled One Safe Place Houston , a 5.5-acre campus designed to provide survivors of domestic violence with housing, crisis care, and resources for rebuilding their lives.

The 5.5-acre campus will provide a safe, comprehensive space offering wraparound, client-centered services for survivors and their children. It marks a significant expansion of HAWC ’s 48-year mission, creating a first-of-its-kind facility designed to help survivors heal and rebuild their lives.
The opening comes at a critical time as domestic violence homicides continue to rise in Houston. In 2024, one in four homicides in the city was linked to intimate partner violence.
The facility will include 135 supportive housing apartments, a 24-hour crisis response and assessment center, and a Survivor Economic Empowerment Hub designed to provide job skills training and financial resources.

The event featured remarks from several community leaders, including Mayor John Whitmire, District Attorney Sean Teare, Commissioners Rodney Ellis and Lesley Briones, Houston Police Chief Noe Diaz, and HAWC CEO Emilee Whitehurst.
