Meet JJ Hampton: Breakaway roper at Rodeo Houston

Houston – JJ Hampton is an 18-time Women’s Pro Rodeo Association champion from Stephenville, TX.

KPRC had the chance to catch up with Hampton before her final qualifying competition for semi-finals at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

She is competing in the breakaway roping competition for the fourth year at Rodeo Houston.

"My sport is really grown in the last few years, and Houston stepped it up and offered us equal money, and it’s been amazing," said Hampton.

Hampton said breakaway roping is similar to tight end roping, but instead in this discipline, you give the calf a head start.

“Once you get to Rodeo, it’s all muscle memory,” said Hampton.

Outside of being a Rodeo athlete, Hampton is also a real estate agent.

Hampton is also a member of the Texas Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame.

She hopes to qualify for semifinals to come back to Rodeo Houston.

“It’s a wonderful, exciting place to be,” said Hampton.
