Preliminary information from authorities suggests that Tayes was attempting to break into his ex-girlfriend’s apartment by kicking in the front door.

During the forced entry, Tayes reportedly attempted to assault his ex-girlfriend’s 24-year-old son, who then retrieved a firearm and shot Tayes in self-defense.

At the time of the incident, others were present inside the unit. Deputies have confirmed that the case will be referred to a grand jury for further investigation.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez confirmed the details of the case on social media and expressed that the investigation is ongoing.

This marks the latest homicide investigation in the area, as the Harris County Sheriff’s Office continues to respond to incidents of violence across the county.
