A man is dead after attempting to break into his ex-girlfriend’s apartment late Wednesday night.
Harris County deputies responded to the shooting at 11:50 p.m. on West Village Drive, near the Eastex Freeway and Hamill Road.

They found the man, later identified as Wilbert Tayes, with gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Preliminary information from authorities suggests that Tayes was attempting to break into his ex-girlfriend’s apartment by kicking in the front door.
During the forced entry, Tayes reportedly attempted to assault his ex-girlfriend’s 24-year-old son, who then retrieved a firearm and shot Tayes in self-defense.
At the time of the incident, others were present inside the unit. Deputies have confirmed that the case will be referred to a grand jury for further investigation.
Sheriff Ed Gonzalez confirmed the details of the case on social media and expressed that the investigation is ongoing.

attempted to assault his ex-girlfriend’s son (24), who retrieved a pistol and shot Tayes. Others were in the unit at the time. Tayes was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
