The Harris County Tax Office held a press conference to discuss important information for property owners in the Houston area as tax season nears.

The property tax deadline for Houston homeowners is Friday, Jan. 31, by midnight.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Payments must be postmarked by midnight on Friday. If a payment is postmarked beyond that date, you will be handed fines and interest. If you are paying by mail, ask the post office for a certificate of mailing so you have proof that you submitted the payment.
  • Tax offices will have extended hours Friday. All 16 branches and the downtown location will be open from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
  • You can pay your taxes in person, over the phone, or online. You can pay with a credit card, although there will be a transaction fee. You can avoid this fee by paying by e-check.
  • If you are paying with a check, you do not need to wait in line. The officials who check you in can send your check through a drop box and give you a receipt, ensuring the transaction.

Ramirez will provide information about payment options for property taxes, as well as payment locations, extended hours, and other critical details.
